Celebrate the Small Things

Image
Celebrate the Small Things is a weekly bloghop hosted by Viklit over at Scribblings of an Aspiring Author . The idea is to post anything you want to celebrate from the last week. This week I'm celebrating: - My graphics card stopped working this week. While this isn't something to celebrate, it's helped me with my writing. Now that I can't play on any games (The Sims 2/3 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, I'm looking at you) I have nothing to distract me from my writing. I've probably done more proper writing this week than I have in the last month. Due to this I probably won't be replacing it straight away; I'll at least wait until after Camp NaNo!  - Good books. I've read some great ones in the last week; there really is nothing better.

Write Edit Publish: Romance

I haven't participated in WEP for such a long time. This month's theme is Romance, not one of my stronger genres, so I thought I'd give it a try. Last year I got an idea for a novel, and the following scene was inspired by that novel idea. Hopefully I'll get the rest of the novel written for NaNoWriMo in November. I wrote it kind of last minute so it's not brilliant, and it's not your typical romance either. I hope you enjoy it! Conflicted The door creaked loudly as I opened it, echoing around the small dark room. She was sat rigid on the mattress, wide eyes fixed on the door, but when she realised it was me, she relaxed and lay back on the mattress, smiling slightly. I edged inside, locking the door behind me, and crossed the concrete floor to sit beside her. I held out the brown paper bag in my hand, and grinned. “Guess what I brought?” She sat up, her eyes fixed longingly on the bag. Then they flicked to the door. “Don’t worry, he’s not ho

What's Up Wednesday

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow , and the idea is to let other bloggers know where you are with any writing and reading goals you may have. 1. What I'm reading I finished reading Cinder , which I loved - definitely need to get the next one soon! I also read Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor - I devoured this book. Again, I can't wait to read the next in my series.  I'm now reading The Trouble with Flying by Rachel Morgan (in exchange for a review) and still reading A Clash of Kings . 2. What I'm writing  I'm mainly focusing on preparation for Camp NaNo, which starts in July. I'm planning on writing short stories/flash fiction for it, and I want to get plenty of ideas down and maybe start writing a few short outlines before the challenge begins.  3. What else I've been up to Mostly working - I've been getting a lot of overtime in lately, sin

It was lovely to see him again, and I think we'll be making it a regular thing.  - I had a migraine on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, which isn't something to celebrate but my boyfriend's mum gave me a migraine pill for it which cleared it right up - nothing ever works on my migraines, so this is good news! I'll be getting some for myself sometime soon.  - My sister got engaged last week! Super exciting, I can't wait until she starts planning the wedding :)

What I'm reading I didn't get to post last Wednesday because I was busy shopping with my mum, and I completely forgot to post. Oops! Since the last time I posted for this meme, I've finished reading A Witch Alone by Ruth Warburton, which I didn't really enjoy; the series just got worse as I went along, and by the end I was glad I didn't have to read any more. I also read Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell, which I loved; it's the first book written by her which I've read, and I'll definitely be reading more.  I'm currently reading A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin (still) and Cinder by Marissa Meyer - another one I'm loving! 2. What I'm writing I'm still working on edits for Hunted , my NaNo novel. I haven'

This week I'm celebrating: - Overtime at work. I've been struggling with money a little lately, but thankfully I've managed to pick up some overtime at work. It means working 6 days a week, but it'll be worth it when I get paid.  - A lovely day out shopping with my mum on Wednesday. She bought me a dress and three new books (which I am rather more excited about than the dress, because books = happiness). I got Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (I'm reading Eleanor and Park right now, and I love it), Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green, and City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare.

This week I'm celebrating: - Re-writes are going well; I'm still getting one scene day written, and I'm on chapter 5 now.  - I treated myself to four new books on my kindle the other day; it was a choice between one paperback for £10 (City of Heavenly Fire, which I can't wait to read) or four kindle books for £10, so obviously I went with the four - four books are better than one, right? I got Eleanor and Park , Stormdancer , Cinder , and Daughter of Smoke and Bone , all of which I've heard great things about. I can't wait to get reading! - Stories. Reading them, watching them, writing them - this week I'm celebrating stories in every form.

IWSG and What's Up Wednesday

The Insecure Writer's Support Group was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh as a place where writers can talk about their insecurities once a month, and receive encouragement and support from other writers. It's such an amazing group, it even has its own website now, which you can visit here . I'm feeling pretty confident with my writing this month. For the first time since I wrote it for NaNoWriMo in November, I feel like I'm getting somewhere with my novel. I've just started re-writes on it, and they're going really well. I love that I'm writing every day again; I really have missed it. It's so hard to get back into the habit when you haven't been doing it for so long.  I still have insecurities, of course. I'm re-writing the whole novel, so I have the occasional "Is this any better than the original?" thought, but I try not to let it bother me. I'm treating the re-write as though it is a second first draft, just because the

Goals for June

I had a productive month in May, I finally feel like I'm getting back into a routine after the craziness of the A to Z challenge. My goals for May were to: - Start revisions on my Nano novel -  I'm up to chapter 4 now, which is great. I'm aiming for re-writing a scene every day. I was originally going to try a chapter a day, but that didn't work, not surprisingly. - Read 6 books - I got my 6 books read this month, which is great. I'm still one book behind for my Goodreads challenge, though. - Write every day -  I didn't do this at the start of the month, but I have in the last couple of weeks since I started working on my re-writes. I'm noticing that I'm getting inspired to write more, too - it really is true what they say; the more you write, the more you want to write. My goals for June are: - Get up to chapter 12 of my NaNo novel re-written - If I carry on writing one scene a day, I should easily reach this target. - Read 6 books - I
