What's Up Wednesday

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow, and the idea is to let other bloggers know where you are with any writing and reading goals you may have.

1. What I'm reading
I'm still reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but I'm right near the end now, I should get it finished in a couple of days. I'm off work next week too, so I should get a lot of reading done then.

2. What I'm writing
I'm still not writing anything; I'm having a well deserved break after finishing my dissertation. I have plenty of ideas swirling around in my head, so it won't be long before I'm writing again.

3. What else I've been up to
The weather's starting to get lovely and chilly here in England, so I've been spending a lot of time at home. I've basically been getting home from work and getting snuggled up under a blanket, reading or playing computer games. It's been lovely!

4. What inspires me right now
I'm inspired by all of the new ideas I've got, and by the old ones that have been waiting patiently in the back of my mind for me to finish my degree work and be able to work on them. It's exciting knowing that I can do whatever I want writing-wise now that I've finished my Masters.

  1. You deserve a break. And we are starting to cool off as well, especially in the evenings. Good sleeping weather!

  2. I agree with Alex - you deserve a break. And enjoy all those ideas. That's one of the most wonderful part of being a writer, all those ideas twirling through the head :)

  5. So much in this post feels familiar. I'm currently rereading Harry Potter, I'm not writing either, and I'm enjoying the slightly chillier weather. :D I think having all kinds of ideas swirling around your head is awesome! That way when you're ready to write again, you'll already have tons of stuff to work with. :-)

  6. taking a break is always a good idea, and what better way to relax than by reading some HP! The weather here is also cooling down, I love the fall! Have a great week!

  7. Gosh how I love me some HP! I'm feeling a bit in a stump and unable to concentrate on new books, maybe following your lead will help me out. I think I'm about to break out those books...

Enjoy the break, Laura, after that hard work you surely deserve it ;)

  9. Cuddling up, reading, playing computer games?!? Okay, we seriously need to switch places for a week. One week--that's all I'm asking. I'll even have the scientists in my basement work up a skin modification device so no one can tell. Deal? ;)

  10. I am not enjoying the colder weather lol, mainly because we have a huge amount of rain with it and every time I venture out I get soaked lol. But I agree you deserve a break. Enjoy it and relax.

  11. Hooray for writing freedom! Enjoy it :D

Yes, the cooler and rainy weather definitely has me reaching for the blankets and extra cups of tea ^_^ I just wish there weren't so many spiders around. Eeep!

  12. Enjoy the break! It's gone so cold here, it came as a bit of a shock after the heatwave this summer!

  13. I love how for writers "taking a break" basically means letting our minds fill up with new story ideas! I think those ideas are the fuel that keep us going. I'm jealous of your chilly weather, which sounds so crazy to say. I wish it was fall all year. Enjoy your break and your extra reading time! :)

  15. Ooooooo I seem to be going against the general flow here Miss Laura, but I think it is good to write stuff. Not pressured it must be right writing, but little bits of chilled stuff. thoughts, ideas, little plots and the like.

Maybe its because I am rubbish at computer games (and reading) or just that I like to have created something each day, even if it is just another mad post on my blog or the arm of a small cardboard sculpture sort of thing....

However you must chill in the way you are happiest chilling, being happy is rather important.... :)

  16. How awesome to have the time now to write whatever! I'm sure you'll be writing lots in the next few weeks! Enjoy!

  17. You definitely deserve a break after all the work you put in to your dissertation.
That's one of my favorite Harry Potter books. :)

  18. Enjoy the break. Harry Potter books are an excellent brain getaway after finishing up with your program. Happy reading. :)

  19. I like that you said it's getting lovely and chilly in England now. My fondest memories of England are this time of year: Autumn and Winter, the nights drawing in; catching the bus home from school and the sun already beginning to set; the chill in the air; even the rain! If I'm ever prone to getting homesick, it's memories of England from October through December that'll do it. :)

I'm going to take a middle ground on your break: enjoy being done with the academic writing, but give your ideas a chance to see themselves on paper. If only some brief outline sketches, character names, possible titles--perhaps just to see which one catches your imagination most, and pushes its way to the front of the queue.

However you spend your time, I hope you enjoy it. By the way, I recommend Ovaltine and cheese on toast as an excellent snuggle snack. :)

  20. Hi, Laura,

That sounds so great... Congrats on getting your Masters... You should be very proud of yourself. And it's good you are taking a nice vacation away from writing. The muse needs to rest too...

LOVE Harry Potter... Five is one of my favs... Umbridge is so much funnier in the book than in the movie version. You'll enjoy six and seven as well. The books are so much more magical...
