Provex City by Michael Pierce - Review

Provex City, written by fellow blogger Michael Pierce, has been on my to-read list ever since he posted an extract on his blog. He's just done a blog tour for Provex City, and has revealed the cover for the second book in the series, SUSY Asylum.

Fifteen-year-old Oliver Grain begins his school year fighting off bullies, learning about the boy who committed suicide in his room, and trying to understand why his history teacher, Mr. Gordon, has taken such a personal interest in him.

Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe you can make bullies simply disappear? Do you believe you can walk through walls?

Mr. Gordon tells Oliver: "When you truly believe anything is possible, you will be able to open doors where there were only walls." And one of those doors leads Oliver to Provex City, which puts him in far greater danger than he can possibly fathom.

My Review

Positive Aspects:
The book has excellent characterisation. I adore Oliver, the main character, and not only because I have a thing for male POV's! He's a well written character, just a normal teenage boy with flaws and problems, who happens to be thrust into an extraordinary world. The other characters are written very well, too; I particularly liked his friends. Each of the characters has their own distinct personality, and each have their own flaws.
The plot is brilliant, very original and kept me guessing the whole way through. There are some traditionally teenage scenes; getting drunk at parties, going to clubs, and the book deals with very real issues such as bullying, as well as going off into the wonderful world that is Provex City.
Also, I love the cover.

Negative Aspects:
The only thing that stopped me giving this book 5 stars is that some parts in the story weren't written clearly, so I was a little confused at some points, but not enough to take away from my enjoyment of the story.

Overall, a great book with an excellent plot and great characters. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. I give it 4 stars.

  7. Huh, the biggest appeal for me is that this sounds like a fairly unique twist on an age-old storyline.

Will keep a lookout for this book.
